When I read a newspaper article that may be of interest to my clients, I'll make 50-100 copies of the article (or however many copies I'll need ... sometimes it's only one or two) and mail it with a brief note to the clients who could either (a) benefit from the info or (b) will appreciate that I thought enough of them or value their business enough that I'm keeping their interests in mind.
Two instances of this turning into new business come to mind. Several years ago I saw an article where one of my friends from school was quoted as an expert source. I sent her a copy of the article with a note about how I was glad she was doing well. Later that week I got a thank you call and the first part of several thousand dollars worth of work that year (and many thousands since).
In a more recent example, I noticed a client's picture in a trade magazine. I sent the magazine off to him and received a warm note of thanks a few days later. One of his company's divisions also sent a hefty job in. We would have probably done the work anyway, but I'm sure I put a smile on my client's face when he got his morning mail.
Be on the lookout for anything that will help your clients, including articles about their competitors. Send it off with a brief note (handwritten is not only acceptable here, it is preferred). Do this often enough and you'll be remembered when they need your services.
