Want to promote your business to customers of nearby non-competing businesses? For about $20/year, you can buy a couple of magazine subscriptions to stock your neighbors' waiting rooms (just about every type of office and repair facility has a waiting room of some sort).
Have the magazines delivered to your office or shop. Print some attractive labels that say "This magazine brought to you by [your name here]" and then add a soft-sell ad to suggest reasons to visit your place when they're in the area (they're already in the area). Once your ad label is in place, hand-deliver them to your selected waiting rooms. Keep track of where new people come from, and make sure the magazines fit your image and that of the waiting rooms.
Everyone wins in this situation. You get excellent exposure for your ad buck, the waiting room office gets free reading material for their patrons, and the "waiter" (the reader and potential patron of your business) gets something fresh to read instead of that year old copy of People magazine I seem to find in every waiting room.
Assume 10 people per day see your label on the magazine and 250 days per year; that's 2,500 exposures for only $20. And these people are within walking distance of your place when they read your message. That's about the most cost-effective ad placement I've ever come across. (Editor's note: Written while bored silly in a Johns Hopkins Hospital waiting room and glancing over that same issue of People from last year).
