Back in college I ran a small typing service catering to my fellow students. A lot of my business was last minute typing jobs ... write the paper the day before and get it typed up just in time for the next day ... people rarely planned ahead. Most students would spend the entire evening typing up the 10 or 20 page report and have little time left for the rest of their work or, in many cases, the party going on in the next dorm room.
I was interested in capturing this business (I partied during the daytime instead of going to classes). But money is always a concern for students, and there's always someone trying to undercut prices. So I came up with a marketing slogan that was simple and to the point. An artist friend created a cartoon of a typist sitting behind an exploding typewriter with the caption "Buy Yourself a Free Night" above the drawing.
I ran this ad in local college papers and got a phenomenal response. While students would choke at paying $1.50 a page (this was 15 years ago), they could better understand paying $15.00 to $30.00 to gain an extra day of freedom.
To this day I still use the slogan (in a modified form) when convincing people to use my list and mailing services. "Buy your staff some extra time to get the rest of their work done" ... I'm showing them the benefits of sending their work out vs. lost opportunities of spending the time to do it themselves in-house. It generally works well, and translates the dollars spent with my company into dollars saved at their own office.
